Northern Virginia Hockey Team Gets Fiery in New Portrait Session
Shooting on the Ice: A Whole New Arena
As a photographer, you’re always chasing new perspectives—and this shoot offered that in spades. This was my first time shooting directly on the ice. The frigid environment, reflective surfaces, and slick conditions created unique challenges but also exciting possibilities. The players’ speed and skill brought every frame to life, and I was able to glide light stands across the ice to dial in some cinematic lighting setups.
Fog That Stayed to Play
One of the biggest surprises? The fog machine. On most sets, fog dissipates quickly, but here it clung to the cold rink, wrapping the players in an ethereal mist that created moody, high-contrast backdrops. Instead of fighting it, we embraced it. The fog became part of the story—a visual metaphor for the intensity and mystery of game day.
Fire and Ice: Epic Effects for an Epic Team
With safety precautions in place and some pyro magic, we introduced fire effects to a few select shots—a flaming puck here, a glove ablaze there. Combined with the icy backdrop and team energy, the images hit that perfect balance of bold and cool. These weren’t just portraits—they were declarations of power, unity, and grit.
Patriot Hockey: Ready for the Season
The team’s excitement was palpable. These athletes don’t often get the chance to experience a shoot like this, and their energy translated into every frame. From seniors owning their leadership roles to rookies soaking it all in, every player brought something to the session. And seeing them proud of their images? That’s the payoff.
Why It Matters
Sessions like this elevate not just the team’s image, but its spirit. These portraits will live on locker room walls, social feeds, and memories for years to come. For other teams looking to go beyond the basic banner shot, know this:
You can shoot on the ice.
You can get creative with fire, fog, and lighting.
And you can trust a photographer who’s excited to meet the challenge.
